Below, I’ve provided a list of questions that will help you build your benefits guide.

“Selling” Your Organization Starts with Asking the Right Questions

Medical

  • When is coverage effective?
  • Who is your medical insurance provider?
  • Do you provide coverage options? (HSA, PPO)
  • Do you provide coverage for individual and family?
  • What are medical insurance costs for individual and family?

Dental

  • When is coverage effective?
  • Who is your dental insurance provider?
  • Do you provide coverage options? (standard vs. premium plans)
  • Do you provide coverage for individual and family?
  • What are dental insurance costs for individuals and family?

Vision

  • When is coverage effective?
  • Who is your vision insurance provider?
  • Do you provide coverage options? (standard vs. premium plans)
  • Do you provide coverage for individual and family?
  • What are vision insurance costs for individuals and family?

Time Off

  • How many days of vacation are offered?
    • What is the accrual rate?
    • Does vacation accrual increase with years of service?
  • How many days of sick leave are offered?
    • What is the accrual rate?
    • Does sick accrual increase with years of service?
  • How many paid holidays are offered?
  • Do employees have to complete a probationary period before they can use their time off or can they start using time off as soon as it’s accrued?
  • Do you offer any additional days off for wellness?

Retirement

  • Do you offer a 401k plan?
    • When can employees begin contributing?
    • Are there Roth and pre-tax options?
    • What percentage does your company contribute?
    • When do employees receive that contribution?
    • When are employees vested in that contribution?
    • Who is your 401k provider?
  • Do you offer a pension plan or alternative retirement plan?
    • What percentage does your company contribute?
    • What are the options for employee contribution?

Life Insurance and Disability

  • What amount of life insurance is provided by your company?
  • Do employees have voluntary life insurance coverage options as well?
  • Who is eligible for short-term disability? Is it provided automatically/paid for by the company or do employees need to opt-in and contribute through payroll deduction?
  • Who is eligible for long-term disability? Is it provided automatically/paid for by the company or do employees need to opt-in and contribute through payroll deduction?

Parental Benefits

  • Do you provide paid maternal leave?
    • How many weeks and what is the pay structure?
  • Do you provide paid paternal leave?
    • How may weeks and what is the pay structure?
  • Do employees need to work a certain amount of time before being eligible for paid parental leave?
  • What dependent care or daycare benefits do you offer?

Career Development

  • Do you offer paid training?
    • Please provide examples.
  • Do you offer financial assistance for certifications and continuing education credits?
    • What amount?
  • Do you offer tuition assistance?
    • What amount?
    • What’s the repayment period?
    • How long does an employee need to work for you organization before qualifying for tuition assistance?
  • Do you offer opportunities to attend professional conferences?
    • Do you pay attendance fees?
  • Do you offer opportunities to join professional organizations?
    • Do you pay membership fees?
  • Do you provide routine performance evaluations? (at least annually)
  • Do you offer annual merit pay increases?
  • Do you offer annual cost of living pay increases?

Additional Perks

  • Do you offer a flexible work arrangement? (remote or hybrid work options)
  • Do you offer a flexible schedule?
  • Do you provide equipment (laptops, etc.) for those that have remote work options?
  • Do you offer employee discounts on any products or services?
  • Do you hold employee appreciation events?
  • Do you offer any free meals?
  • Does your organization have opportunities for employees to participate in extra-curricular activities? (for example: company softball league, exercise classes over lunch, etc.)
  • Does your organization offer student loan assistance or forgiveness?
  • Do you offer any free counseling sessions or any mental health services?

Employer Reputation

  • Does your organization belong to any professional associations?
  • Has your organization received any awards or recognition?
  • How many new service lines or facilities has your organization opened recently?
  • What percentage of your employees received promotions in the last year?
  • What percentage of your employees are using tuition assistance?
  • What’s the average tenure in your organization?
  • Why do employees stay with your organization?
  • What other accomplishments has your organization achieved? (for example: rehabilitation rates, graduation rates, increase in clients served, service satisfaction results)
  • Do you offer paid community service opportunities?
    • How many community service hours have your employees completed?
    • What organizations do you partner with for community service?
  • Does your organization offer job security? How many new positions have you added in the last year?
